Forgiveness: A Playlist
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.
- Matthew 18:21-22
What do you do when someone does you so wrong you consider erasing them from your life completely? You want them gone ‒ kerpoof! ‒ no trace of a memory anywhere in sight or in mind.
Yet, God calls us to forgive.
Who is truly deserving of that forgiveness? We may not always understand, but God commands us to forgive our brother seventy times seven times: in other words, a million times, and then after that, another million.
What is he saying? What does that say about God? God is a merciful Father with an unlimited heart. Although our experiences bewilder us, trouble us, anger us, hurt us, to the point where our threads are coming apart at the seams, God has no such limitations. He is not bound in flesh and passion and deceit. He is boundless in ultimate truth and mercy.
God has his limits, though, on injustice. We forgive so we are not held captive: we leave the rest to God, for we know evil will not go unpunished; that is His promise — and we know He keeps good on those. We are not called to let someone continue hurting us, damaging our Spirit and soul. We are called to be resilient; we are called to love; and sometimes, we are called to leave and be delivered. We ask God for the wisdom in the moment to know how to act & how to let go.
Here is a playlist of songs that explore the many emotions associated with forgiveness: hurt, pain, loss, reflection, and last but not least, joy and love; compassion and empathy; letting go and still wanting the best for that person, or persons. Although situations may not always permit people to re-enter our lives in the same way, we should understand that love is expansive and keeps growing to include not just our own hearts but others’ as well. Allowing a person to grow and change is no more or less than what we want for ourselves.
So listen up (to these tunes): forgiveness is not easy, but it’s possible and necessary in our lives. I hope you gain some encouragement and refreshment from these songs today. Until next time! Playlist link:
