Smokie Norful’s Debut Book Take the Lid Off: Trust God, Release the Pressure, and Find the Life He Wants for You

Cooking benefits all, supplying much needed nutrients and satisfying hunger that comes with living in a human body. The matter in which food is cooked however, determines its flavor and how effective it is in satisfying the palate. Gospel artist Smokie Norful has created a space for us to explore our lives through a cooking technique as metaphor.

Pastor, and Grammy award winning singer, Norful’s debut book Take the Lid Off: Trust God, Release the Pressure, and Find the Life He Wants for You, published by Thomas Nelson on September 5, 2017, began as a life lesson learned during childhood in his grandmother’s kitchen. To effectively cooked down sweet rice and as a solution to liquid bubbling over in the pot, the solution Smokie’s grandmother gave was simply to “take off the lid”. A single gesture embedded in the process of reduction, stands for reducing what’s not needed in life. An enclosed pot holds all ingredients, but to create a well-cooked, hearty meal, some of that material must be let go. Just like our lives, to reach the place of spiritual richness, we must make space for it and allow God in and this in turn, helps the pressures of life go down.

In his book, Norful teaches readers that there are four actions that can help them release their full potential:

  1. Look Inward, experiencing the cleansing of forgiveness and the power of God.
  2. Look Outward, seeking for others to experience the joy of living for God and have the best God has to offer.
  3. Look Upward and marvel at God’s love and strength to accomplish his purposes.
  4. Move Onward, devising a strategy to accomplish all God has put in our hearts to do.

To accentuate the message of Take the Lid Off, Smokie has partnered with his label home, Motown Gospel, to release a digital-only album titled “Nothing Is Impossible”. The twelve-track project, features some of Norful’s classic songs including “Still Say Thank You,” “No One Else,” and “Run ‘Til I Finish.”
