Every morning is a new day: the sun shines, or perhaps it is dark, as we approach winter. Either way, it is a chance for us to get up and start again anew, despite the challenges of yesterday. This promise of mercy and grace from God holds true for all His children, even when we know that we know we messed up. Sometimes, a coworker gets under our skin and we pop off. Sometimes, someone at the Metro stares at us and we aren’t exactly nice. Other times, we are mean to the ones closest to us, the hardest thing to sometimes get over. What does God say?
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!
– Matthew 18:22
Paul writes this:
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry…
– Ephesians 4:26-27
The advice seems unrealistic, but perhaps it is good. If you can, bring your anger and your turmoil, your struggle and pain to God and He will listen and hear it. What is better that bringing your worries to God, the author and finisher of life itself? Who better can resolve what you’re feeling than the Creator of all that you have ever been and will ever be? God says:
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
– 2 Chronicles 7:14
I find encouragement in this verse and in the morning light, because I spent a long time in the darkness. Fumbling around, blind, scared, and forever tripping over my own feet, light brings peace and clarity to me, allowing me to see myself the way, perhaps, God sees me. If I bring my pain and sorrows to him, he promises to clear my cloudy skies, if not at this moment, then soon, as this life is fleeting. In the Old Testament it says:
Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.
They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
– Lamentations 3:22-23
