[Listen] Award-Winning Group August Greene Release Remix For the Single “Optimistic” ft. Kirk Franklin, Kierra Sheard and BJ the Chicago Kid
The super group August Greene, has released the remix to their single “Optimistic”. The group, composed of the legendary spitkicker Common, musical maestro Robert Glasper and percussion master Karriem Riggins are long time collaborators and have collectively fused the sounds of jazz, hip hop and R&B in their latest work. The group won an Emmy award in 2017 for their musical contribution to Ava Duvernay’s documentary “13th”. The song “Letter To the Free” won for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
The original version of their debut single “Optimistic” featuring Brandy debuted on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. The song, a cover of The Sounds of Blackness’ 1991 single of the same name, is reworked to include a mid-tempo groove with a funky-bop. The original contemporary gospel hit is revisited with featured vocals from Kirk Franklin, Kierra Sheard and BJ the Chicago Kid. Kirk, the Cab Calloway and Spliff Star of Gospel, intros the song with a quick, yet striking message of optimism. Kierra Sheard’s R&B-tinged vocals color the 1st verse, hook and bridge and BJ the Chicago Kid drenches his verse in soulful layers. Common per his signature uplifting lyrics, stamps a poetic optimism into the heart of the song.
