Grammy Re-cap – Bishop Hezekiah Walker Hosts Grammy Gospel Celebration in NYC
Last weekend was filled with Grammy buzz, pre-parties, wins and post celebrations. The Gospel categories featured nominations for JJ. Hairston, Marvin Sapp, Tina Campbell, Le’Andria, The Walls Group, Travis Greene, Anita Wilson and CeCe Winans who took home both Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song. The Grammy categories are great in number, with this year’s totaling 84. As one of the most viewed shows throughout the year, the Grammy Awards televised very few of the 84 categories live. Most awards are given pre-show and thus the audience is none the wiser. The unfortunate thing about this is the lack of exposure of the range of artists to the viewing audience.
While Grammy parties around New York City were plenty, there was one party that was all about Inspirational music. In one of New York City’s most popular and respected venues, S.O.B.s (Sounds of Brazil) was a night taken over by one of inspirational gospel’s own Bishop Hezekiah Walker. Walker, hosted the night to celebrate the Grammy nomination of fellow gospel singer J.J. Hairston and Youthful Praise for the triumphant hit song “You Deserve It”.
The show of comradery and respect resonated throughout the night as Bishop Walker introduced various artists who came to perform, support and experience the night. J.J. Hairston performed “You Deserve It” as eloquently as the lyrics while the audience transformed to choir during the hook. Others who came to celebrate and take to the stage were Miranda Curtis, who enthralled and soothed the crowed with her performance, Jason Nelson who anointed the crowd, and David Bloom, co-writer of “You Deserve It” gave his testimony to writing the dynamic song.
