Church of God In Christ Mourns Passing of Bishop John Henry Sheard
On Thursday, November 11th, Bishop J. Drew Sheard the Presiding Bishop and Chief Apostle of the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC) announced the passing of his father, Bishop John Henry Sheard. Bishop Sheard, who passed at age 84, served as the Chairman of the Board of Bishops and provided leadership to more than 500 COGIC bishops for more than 20 years. He was also very active within the city of Detroit where he served as Police Commissioner. He also served as a member of the City of Detroit’s Human Rights Commission and the Board of Directors of the Detroit Urban League. In 1982, he became the pastor of Detroit’s Greater Mitchell Temple Church and in 1992, he was appointed as the prelate of the Michigan Southwest First Jurisdiction. In April 2020, Bishop John Henry Sheard was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Willie Mae, who died of COVID-19. The National Homegoing Celebration will be held at the Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church Of God In Christ on Friday, November 19th at 10am. He leaves to mourn his son, Bishop J. Drew Sheard, daughter-in-law First Lady Karen Clark-Sheard, grandchildren J. Drew Sheard II and Kierra Sheard-Kelly and a host of family members and friends.
Gospel Singer’s 10-Year-Old Niece Takes Her Life After Being Bullied
Isabella “Izzy” Tichenor, an autistic, 10-year-old Black student living in Utah, died by suicide after reportedly being repeatedly harassed and bullied by classmates. Izzy’s mother Brittany Clark Tichenor Cox and stepfather Charles Coxhad alleged that their daughter had been repeatedly teased and called the n-word by other students. The tragic death occurred just weeks after the family’s complaints to the Davis School District in Farmington, UT went unanswered. The DOJdetailed the disturbing pattern that the agency had been investigating since July 2019 at the school district where Black and Asian students who make up roughly only 1% of the 73,000 students were routinely harassed. Isabella Tichenor was the beloved niece of gospel singer Denise Tichenor who was a mainstay on BET for 17 years as a lead singer on the Bobby Jones Gospel Show. She is also a member of the Kurt Carr Singers. A private service was held for Izzy on Saturday, November 13th.
Tennesse Pastor Disarms Gunman During Service
In Tennessee, Ezekiel Ndikumana pastor of the Nashville Light Mission Pentecostal Church is being heralded as a hero after he averted a potential mass tragedy by disarming a man brandishing a gun during a church service. On Sunday, November 7th, the man identified as 26-year-old Dezire Baganda stood in front of the church and revealed the weapon while others were praying. The shocking video footage of the incident revealed the events leading up to the moment Pastor Ndikumana approached and tackled Baganda who was seen on the video waving a gun in front of more than 60 parishioners. Baganda had ordered everyone to stand. Once Baganda was taken down, several other church members rushed to aid the pastor in removing the weapon and subsequently restraining Baganda until police arrived. Fortunately, thanks to Pastor Ndikumana’s quick-thinking actions he and others were able to defuse the situation without any shots being discharged.
Homegoing Services Held for Mother of Snoop Dogg
Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg and his siblings gathered on Sunday, November 7th for a private memorial service and viewing at the Long Beach Colonial Mortuary in Long Beach, CA held for his mother Evangelist Beverly Tate. Tate who had been rushed to the hospital three months prior for an undisclosed illness died on October 24th. She was 70 years old. Her passing came just four days after the rapper whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr. turned 50. In a touching Instagram post, Snoop shared a photo of himself with his mother and wrote “Mama thank u for having me.” Evangelist Tate’s celebration of life was held at the YouTube Theatrein Inglewood, CA on Monday, November 8th. Several gospel legends including The Williams Brothers, and Kirk Franklin performed during the service. Snoop, his brothers and other family members were all coordinated in red attire. They said their final farewells to the woman who said of herself on her Facebook page “I AM A Statewide Ordained Minister…..A WOMAN AFTER GODS OWN HEART…..”
Lifetime to Premiere Kirk Franklin’s “A Gospel Christmas”
Kirk Franklin’s “A Gospel Christmas” will be featured during next month’s Lifetime TV holiday movies. The film based on a screenplay written by Kourtney Richards will be starring Demetria McKinney, Regina Belle and Chaz Lamar Shepherd. The film directed by Erica Sutherlin, is about a young assistant pastor named Olivia, played by McKinney who gets assigned as the lead pastor of a new church right before Christmas and fears her inability to handle the responsibilities. Kirk Franklin, who makes a special appearance in film wrote, and arranged the film’s songs. He also serves as executive producer along with Tracy ‘Twinkie’ Byrd. “Kirk Franklin’s A Gospel Christmas” will air on Lifetime TV on December 4th at 8p ET/ 7p CT.
